Consumers Union's reply ("Sport utility
vehicles are a menace to the environment," Letters, Nov. 28) to Eric
Peters' commentary on sport utility vehicles ("Making SUVs the scapegoat
for policy," Oct. 29) requires a response.
Consumers Union states, "Thirteen miles per gallon for some large SUVs is
simply an outrageous assault on the Earth's fuel supply and adds
disproportionately to global warming." Since there is no scientific
evidence of global warming and there is no shortage of fuel in the foreseeable
future, one can only conclude that environmental zealotry has found its way into
Consumers Union.
This is disturbing because I am a longtime subscriber to Consumer Reports,
published by Consumers Union. I rely on Consumer Reports to be impartial and
objective in evaluating products. Now I won't be sure whether I am getting
objective facts or facts tempered with environmental zealotry.
