An extraordinary act of hypocrisy will occur on Nov. 2 when participants in the Buenos Aires global warming conference board planes and burn millions of gallons of fuel to get to the conference, according to a new paper released by The National Center for Public Policy Research.
The new paper, "Hypocrisy in Buenos Aires: Millions of Gallons of Fuel to be Burned By Those Seeking Curbs on Fuel Use," shows that at least 1.7 million gallons of fuel will be burned for the Buenos Aires conference. This estimate assumes participation in the conference by 9,000 environmentalists, journalists, delegates and observers travelling an average of 12,000 miles to Buenos Aires and back home on a Boeing 747-400. The fuel consumption of the Boeing 747-400 is better than average, burning 8.6 gallons of fuel per passenger, compared to the Lockheed-1011-500, which burns 11.05 gallons of fuel per hour per passenger and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, which burns 9.2 gallons of fuel per hour per passenger.
The estimated 1.7 million gallons of fuel that will be burned for the Buenos Aires conference does not include the fuel to be burned for taxicabs, lighting, air conditioning, and other energy-intensive services needed during the conference.
"It is incredibly hypocritical to burn millions of gallons of fuel -- enough to power a small country -- so that people can attend an international conference in Buenos Aires to lecture us on the virtues of reducing our use of fossil fuels," said David Ridenour, vice president of The National Center for Public Policy Research and author of the paper. "If we're serious about reducing fossil fuel consumption, the first thing we should do is put an end to multimillion-dollar junkets like the Buenos Aires conference. Perhaps by doing so, greenhouse gases won't be the only hot air curbed."
