Raleigh -- Two state Health Department employees skeptical about the threat of Pfiesteria (fihs-TEER'-ee-uh) to human health have been demoted.

New state Health Director Doctor Dennis McBride demoted Doctor Stan Music within the department, while Doctor Greg Smith was transferred to the state division of mental health.

McBride says he found both men overly skeptical of findings by a team of Maryland physicians that Pfiesteria can harm people.

McBride says the physicians have a right to their opinion, but doesn't want them to give false impressions about how the agency views the problem.

Millions of state and federal dollars are being used in new projects and labs studying the microorganism.
