Horse farm comments were uninformed

Bea Arthur's remarks in a recent edition of The Republic, "Actress denounces hormone's maker," is yet another example of a radical animal activist campaign fueled by misinformation and emotion.

It is unfortunate that the public does not realize the full agenda of animal activists. If they ran the world, none of us would have pets or eat fish or meat. There would be no leather shoes, belts, or purses. Wool sweaters would be banned. Their goal is to jeopardize legitimate medical research, which may one day bring us a cure to AIDS or cancer.

Arthur's attack focused on Premarin, an estrogen replacement hormone used by menopausal women. Arthur's comments contained false information and half-truths. Premarin has been used for estrogen replacement therapy for over 50 years and does not contain horse urine.

Premarin's main ingredient is equine estrogen, which is extracted from pregnant mare urine. The pregnant mare urine farms are located, for the most part, in Canada and North Dakota. The farms have been inspected by independent veterinarians, the USDA, the state of North Dakota, the Manitoba Minister of Agriculture and the Canadian Farm Animal Care Trust. All of these agencies confirm that the farms use credible and responsible farming practices and found the horses are well-fed and that sound animal husbandry practices are in place.

Arthur should check her facts before she agrees to again be an emotional shill for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
