The American Lung Association of West Virginia is seeking nominations for its Honor Roll of Clean Indoor Air award program. Launched in 1992, the program recognizes businesses that protect the health of their employees and customers by banning or strictly limiting smoking on their premises.

According to Chantal Centofanti-Fields, ALAWV director of programs and services, more than 400 state businesses have been recognized through the Honor Roll of Clean Indoor Air. "We have given this award to a variety of businesses, ranging from hospitals to restaurants to television stations. We welcome the nomination of any business with a smoking policy," she said.

To be eligible for the award, one of the following criteria must be met in the establishment's smoking policy:
- Gold Award: Total ban on smoking
- Silver Award: Smoking is restricted to portions of "break-type"
areas and/or cafeterias and is completely removed from work areas.

In 1993, the Environmental Protection Agency classified secondhand smoke as a human carcinogen. Since then, companies have become increasingly concerned about protecting their employees and customers from the hazardous effects of tobacco smoke. "The Lung Association has noticed an increase in the number of calls from businesses that need help developing and implementing a smoking policy," said Centofanti-Fields. "The Lung Association sees this as a positive sign that companies are becoming more aware of this issue and are motivated to take action with a smoking policy." For more information or nomination forms, contact Centofanti-Fields at the ALAWV at 342-6600.
