Damn the Science, Full Speed Ahead

Nature September 26, 1996

At a recent Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on global warming, Republicans expressed their skepticism about the scientific evidence for man-made climate change.

In particular, Chairman Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) alleged that the recent assessment of climate change by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had been "heavily edited after what was apparently pressure from policymakers."

Timothy Wirth, the under-secretary for global affairs at the U.S. State Department testified that the allegations against the IPCC "had been totally refuted by the scientists involved."

Sure Tim. And our jails are overflowing with innocent people.

Actually, the purpose of this story is to segue into my favorite Tim Wirth quote (circa 1990) about global warming (I mean, global climate change!):

We've got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory is wrong, we will be doing the right thing in terms of economic and environmental policy.

I'm sure there's no chance that the IPCC did the "right" thing.
