Dear Editor:
Your article "Chemicals called main cause of Parkinson's" (Jan.27) is more an example of reporter Thomas Maugh's skill as a scribe, rather than a journalist.
Maugh apparently took down everything the researchers claimed, but apparently did not ask any probing questions.
The researchers claimed that Parkinson cases are not caused by a defective gene, but rather exposure to "unknown chemicals in the environment."
But their study did not focus on chemicals in the environment. In fact, the study itself makes no mention of chemicals; only genetics. Maugh should have requested some evidence of the culpability of chemicals.
Although blaming chemicals in the environment may make great headlines, it certainly is not supported by any facts.
