Warm weather, darn it

Winter has arrived and temperatures are balmy. It must be global warming. Or, it could be Florida. There is nothing new about warm days in Florida, at any time of the year. But in the areas where the political class congregates, the snow is deep. And not only the snow. 1998 is being proclaimed as the warmest year on record and absolute proof that global warming is cooking us all slowly, like a frog being put in a pot of cold water and being boiled alive before recognizing the gradual change in temperature. Frogs may be that dumb, but people are not. If global warming is occurring, it is doing so at a much lower rate than the global warming experts have been predicting for lo these many years. If humans are the cause of the warming that may be occurring, the evidence of it certainly is skimpy. But the anti-automobile crowd, which is a vocal segment of the global warming community, has a ready answer: Just because no one can prove it is happening doesn't mean it isn't. And if it isn't, terrible things will happen, someday. We certainly can't refute that ironclad argument. Heck, if they are right, it might be time to check out the price of summer vacation timeshares in Greenland. What caused the one-year blip in temperatures? Sun spots? El Nino? Who knows? Ask us in 1,000 years and we may be able to tell you.
